A Murmuration of Starlings

Did anyone see the two-part documentary ‘Swarms: Natures Incredible Invasions’ that was on BBC one earlier this month? I finally got round to watching it the other day and was fascinated by the amazing aerial displays that the thousands of starlings (known as a ‘murmuration’) make above the city of Rome each autumn and winter.

Photographer Richard Barnes has captured the patterns that the birds create. Click here to take a look at his collection entitled ‘Murmur’.

However, its not all beautiful for the locals who see the birds as a real nuisance. Next time a bird drops one on your windscreen, spare a thought for the people of Rome. Click here
