Speak The Web is a new conference organised with the aim of avoiding any of the usual stuff and pomp, and getting speakers into venues up North at an affordable cost. No travel, time off work and hotel bills to pay, get down to a venue, grab a pint and hear what these guys have to say. Each venue will have a local speaker on too, to encourage new blood and grass-roots participation.

The current venues are Liverpool, Leeds, Sheffield and Manchester, and one of the Group Hub leading lights, Jake Smith from JP74, will be on the bill for the Liverpool session.

If this sounds like something you want to know more about, visit the Speak The Web website, or follow them on Twitter.

Info from the people who brought us Chip Shop, The Roses and The Drum:

This year’s MPA Roses Student Creativity Awards judging is taking place on Wednesday 12th March. Following this year’s judging session we are holding a networking evening for Tutors, Students and Industry Creatives starting at 7pm at The Cube, 113-115 Portland Street, Manchester, M1 6DW.

We are hosting this previously very successful event to provide a platform for students and agency creatives to network and allow students to make valuable contacts for their future careers. I would like to ask you to please take the time to come along as meeting those in the industry is very valuable to our students.

In addition to this we aim to keep students from the North, working in the North by building relations with these agencies early on in their careers and introducing them to the creative talent that is so strong outside London.

We would like to invite you to come along and view the winning work and to meet the students.

The evening will begin at 7pm with complimentary refreshments being served. As a free event, numbers are limited so please indicate how many tickets you would like via the attached booking form by faxing back to 0141 559 6050 or via email to katy.thomson@carnyx.com

Self taught, Hillman founded New York based digital design firm hillmancurtis, inc in 1998. After a successful 10 year music career Hillman decided to change course and bought himself an old Mac II and enrolled on a Photoshop course. Despite not having any formal training in digital graphics he has managed to utilise his artistic eye and formidable work ethic to rise to the top of his chosen field.

Hillmancurtis, Inc have grown from designing small flash ads to some of the most trafficked sites on the web. A five man operation, they have garnered a cupboard full of awards for their clever and innovative design solutions.

Hillman has published several very successful books, his first ‘Flash Web Design’ has sold over 100,000 copies and been translated into 14 different languages. His second book ‘MTIV, Process, Inspiration and Practice for the New Media Designer’ demonstrates how to perceive, comprehend and perform to the design maximum. It has become required reading at design schools worldwide. His latest book ‘Hillman Curtis on Creating Short Films for the Web’ was released in September.

Recent work includes projects for AOL, Yahoo! and AIGA as well as a documentary series on designers and artists and a series of short narrative films. As well as making music videos, he is also producing online commercial documentaries for Adobe, BMW and others. Hillman will be showing his work and discussing the addition of film and video into his design practice.
